About nine months ago I had lunch with a thirty-year-old man named Alexander who suffers from acute depression, has relationship issues, and who is drug and alcohol dependent. As articulated by Alexander, it is his alcohol and drug addiction and his acute depression that had the most to do with his constant relationship difficulties.
I recall hearing that a history of mental health issues, chemical dependency, and hazardous and abusive drinking many times happen in the same family. In addiction, I remember hearing that in such situations, a person needs to get treatment for both medical problems and that chemical dependency and mental health issues many times take place in the same person.
As affirmed by Alexander, he is so dejected by his relationship issues and by both of his medical issues that he in effect has little or no reason to accomplish much of anything. What is particularly unfortunate about this is that earlier in his life, Alexander managed to finish two semesters of grad school in middle Eastern studies.
Alexander’s condition makes me wonder if he is an illustration of a person who can look in the mirror and perceive his drug abuse and alcohol drinking problems and do something healthy about these issues or if he is a person who has to hit life’s bottom before he gets drug and alcohol addiction rehabilitation that leads to long lasting recovery.
The Need For a Rehab Regimen He Can Believe In and a Therapist He Can Trust
If it would be helpful I would assume that I could suggest several websites that could possibly help him find info about drug abuse symptoms, the stages of alcoholism, chemical dependency information, and relationship problems. In my honest opinion, however, Alexander needs to locate a counseling program he can believe in and follow over the long term and locate a physician he can trust.
I could be in error but it seems to make sense that Alexander probably needs to look within himself regarding his drug addiction signs and alcoholic symptoms and acknowledge the fact that he cannot use drugs or even drink in moderation if he wants to get sober, stay sober, and start on the path to long-term recovery.
It may be asked how therapy would help his chemical dependency. First of all, there are quite a few newly created doctor-prescribed meds that can help Alexander through his withdrawal symptoms, through the alcohol and alcohol detoxification process, and help him avoid a drug or an alcohol relapse.
Second, Alexander would learn to concede the fact that there is entirely nothing positive about drug abuse and excessive and careless drinking and that involving himself in one or both circumstances is the road to deteriorating health, shattered relationships, a premature death, financial difficulties, legal problems, and poor work and school performance.
Third, counseling for his depression and for his relationship problems might help him manage these psychological issues more successfully and possibly create less of a need for him to involve himself in addictive behavior.
The Significance of Support Groups Like Narcotics Anonymous and Alcoholics Anonymous
There are reasonably numerous other people, family members, and friends who would desire to help Alexander with his substance abuse and his abusive and unhealthy drinking. He possibly would experience greater acceptance from a recovery group such as Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous, on the other hand, instead of getting advice from people who rarely drink or who have never taken drugs.
When Individuals Accomplish Things They Like and About Which They Are Dedicated
There’s a philosophical viewpoint that emphasizes that individuals who do things they love and something about which they are ardent attain an astonishing place in life. Stated more accurately, when people do what they love, they almost never go through an uneventful life or boredom. If they involve themselves in something that is enjoyable, what is more, they become more complete and experience more happiness and delight in life and in their relationships.
When this is examined more closely it becomes apparent that this uplifting way of thinking is poles apart from a life that is rooted in substance abuse because such a lifestyle removes the contentment and joy that life offers.
Due to the fact that Alexander doesn’t have the ambition to do much of anything in his life, it is clear that he badly needs some hope for a more fulfilling life. And the unfortunate thing is that hope is virtually everywhere around Alexander if he could only get to the point in life to get the counseling he needs for his intense depression and drug dependence and alcohol addiction and remain in his treatment protocol.
Enhanced Relationships, A Meaningful Life, Self Respect, and Positive Change Are a Reality
Alexander is simply too young to be dejected in life. He doesn’t understand this at the moment but if he can learn how to remove himself from alcohol and drugs through drug and alcohol rehabilitation and get the treatment he needs for his extreme depression, he can redirect his life and start living with direction, passion, and with self-respect.
More positive relationships, affirmative change, self esteem, and a wonderful life are certainly possibilities for Alexander if only he could become motivated to get the professional rehabilitation he requires, follow through with his therapy program, live his life in a healthy and drug and alcohol-free way, and learn how to acquire a more positive attitude about his existence.
