Although there are many obstacles impairing our children’s self-esteem, there are many things we could do to help our kids fight back. If your child is getting bad grades, cannot make new friends, or get along with other kids he or she may have no self confidence. This could lead your child into a bad situation like getting involved in the wrong crowd. Here are some ideas of ways to help your son or daughter develop better self-belief.
We can develop our children’s self-belief through positive reinforcement. Instead of always criticizing our kids when they are wrong, we can spend more time acknowledging their good behaviors and accomplishments. This will help them to establish a better belief system in their own actions. They will find it easier to relate to positive criteria rather than always seeing the negative.
Joining a group of some sort can be very rewarding and fulfilling for our children. It helps them to feel like they are apart of something important which in turn leads to higher self-reliance. Kids could join almost any group that establishes some type of belonging. It could be a bowling league, chess club or any other group, depending on where your child’s interests lie. The important thing to note here is that you should not push your child into a group of your choice. You child will not feel apart of some group that they hate going to.
We should encourage our children to spend more time outdoors. Most of the teens today spend a high percentage of their free time in front of the television or computer. This in no way helps them develop the skills they need to be successful, confident individuals. We should limit the amount of time kids can spend watching television and accessing the Internet.
We should spend time with our children. In today’s hectic society, a lot of parents are too busy to spend time with their children. This is sad and leads to bad relationships with your children in their teenage years. These parents will wonder why they are unable to communicate with their teenage son or daughter. We should develop a good relationship with our kids in their younger years. This will help to maintain that relationship, as they get older.
Although there are many teenagers that have no self confidence, there are still many things we can do as parents to help them overcome their problems. Don’t ever give up on your son or daughter. Talk to them and find out what they need to help them develop their full potential and have the confidence it takes to be a healthy individual.
