Copyright © 2012 avalon09. Visit the original article at http://raiseselfesteem.com/blog/465/what-i-learned-about-drug-abuse-and-alcohol-dependency-in-high-school-and-my-boosted-self-esteem-and-self-worth/.

When I was a sophomore in high school, I registered for a drug abuse class. At that age, I did not understand that alcohol abuse in truth was a sub classification of drug abuse. While taking this class and learning more about drug and alcohol abuse and particularly about alcohol side effects, I read a lot about Alcoholic Anonymous, their meetings, how their programs have twelve steps, and how successful the Alcoholics Anonymous recovery program has been for people throughout the world. I also learned quite a bit about alcohol treatment and the various alcohol rehab facilities that are usually available to individuals who engage in abusive drinking.

Detrimental End Results That are Correlated With Alcoholism and Alcohol Abuse

Some of the dangerous effects associated with alcoholism and alcohol abuse that I learned about in this class undeniably frightened me. The ruined lives and numerous serious issues experienced by most alcoholics made me feel like I never wanted to drink alcohol when I became old enough. That is, I did not want to face the wreckage and ruination that alcohol addicted individuals almost always experience.

Let this sink in for a moment. What fifteen-year-old individual wants to face premature death due to his or her drinking behavior? What young person wants to become so out-of-control regarding his or her drinking that ingesting alcohol becomes the object of one’s life? What young person wants to go to one of the local alcoholic rehabilitation centers to deal with alcohol-related issues before he or she becomes an adult?

What young person wants to experience alcohol withdrawals when he or she tries to stop drinking? Why would an individual engage in drinking to such an extent that it would cause serious issues in every area of his or her life? Drinking later in life after a person has a career, a family, and develops personal responsibilities makes sense. But why would a teenager want to sacrifice his or her education, employment, finances, and relationships for a life that revolves around abusive drinking?

These issues were so noteworthy that I talked about some of them in class during the school year. What was absolutely unbelievable to me was the number of students who basically didn’t care about the injurious outcomes of excessive drinking that I talked about. It was almost as if they couldn’t be bothered with the facts and how these results can demolish their lives. For the first time in my life I started to understand something that my grandfather used to tell me all through my teen and pre-teen years: you can lead a horse to water but you can’t make it drink.

It’s Important, Energizing, and Beneficial to Keep Away From the Unhealthy and Destructive Outcomes of Alcohol and Drug Abuse

And even at my young age, I also started to comprehend how liberating, beneficial, and important it is in life to remove yourself from the unhealthy and destructive results of alcohol and drug abuse. And understanding this helped me further enhance my self esteem and self worth.

In point of fact, for the past nine months she has been drinking just about one-and-a-half bottles of wine every night, and on the weekends she also has been drinking a number bottles of beer throughout the day. In a word, Jennifer has been drinking so abusively that it’s amazing that she hasn’t suffered from alcohol poisoning.

After feeling unhappy because she was starting to let her health go downhill, Jennifer at long last told herself that she’s had enough, that it’s time to quit the self pity act, that it’s time to quit the excessive drinking, and time to move on with her life. So the following Saturday morning at 9:00 AM, she decided to stop drinking suddenly and completely without planning or preparation.

When She Attempted to Quit Drinking She Felt Ill, She Was Extremely Moody and Anxious, She Had Utterly No Appetite, She Started to Perspire Extensively, Her Head Was Pounding, and She Vomited Several Times

When Jennifer quit drinking, she assumed that she would quite possibly be tempted to ”steal” a couple of drinks, but she never figured that she would feel so awful. More precisely, just about three-and-a-half hours after she stopped drinking, she started to sweat profusely, she had absolutely no appetite, she was extremely tense and moody, she vomited numerous times, and her head was aching.

When she called her best friend and told her that she had stopped drinking and that after a few hours she all of a sudden began experiencing flu-like symptoms, Monica, her best buddy, told Jennifer to call her doctor and go over what was taking place.

She Admits to Her Physician That She Has Been Drinking In an Excessive and Irresponsible Manner, That She Just Tried to Quit Drinking, and That She is Experiencing Terribly Painful Flu-Like Symptoms

So Jennifer called her physician, informed him that she has been drinking in an abusive and excessive manner for several months and that when she tried to abruptly stop drinking earlier in the day, within a couple of hours she felt as if she had the worse flu-like symptoms that she had ever gone through.

Her physician told her that she may be going through symptoms of alcohol withdrawal and that she should have a friend or family member drive her to the emergency room ASAP.

As soon as Jennifer got off the phone, she got a relative to drive her to the hospital. Interestingly, as sick as Jennifer was, all she could think about all the way to the hospital was whether or not she was dependent on alcohol.

Evidently her doctor had phoned ahead and told the emergency room staff to expect Jennifer because when she got to the hospital, she was met by two nurses who promptly told her to get in the wheelchair they had with them. After getting moved to the emergency room and undergoing a couple of basic tests, it was substantiated that Jennifer was in actual fact experiencing alcohol withdrawal symptoms and was in need of alcohol detoxification.

An emergency room doctor gave her some medications to lessen the discomfort of her flu-like symptoms and also gave her some drugs to help eliminate the alcohol that was still in her blood.

An Alcohol Addiction and Alcohol Abuse Healthcare Professional Explains in a Clear Manner That She is Dependent on Alcohol and Then Discusses What Alcohol Withdrawal Symptoms and Alcohol Addiction Stages Are

After a couple of hours, Jennifer was transferred from the ER and transported to the recovery room. After she was in recovery for nearly three hours, Doctor Jeffries, an alcohol addiction and alcohol abuse specialist, came to talk to her. He took plenty of time and explained in a clear fashion that Jennifer had suffered through alcohol withdrawal symptoms when she stopped drinking due to the fact that she had become dependent on alcohol.

He then mentioned the fact that with excessive drinking on an everyday basis, the person’s brain slowly adjusts to the alcohol so that it can function in a “routine” fashion. When the drinker then all at once abstains from drinking, as one would expect, the brain takes action by generating alcohol withdrawal symptoms. Not only this, but her physician also discussed the various alcoholism stages that an alcohol addicted individual usually experiences as the disease progresses.

It is Determined that Jennifer is in the First Stage of Alcoholism and She Receives a Good Prognosis For a Full Recovery if She Gets the Alcohol Addiction Rehab She Requires

Fortunately for Jennifer, it was confirmed that she was in the first stage of alcohol dependency and, as a result, she got a good projection for a full recovery if she gets the alcohol therapy she needs.

Jennifer told the medical practitioner that she will do whatever it takes to get sober and to recover her life and her health. She also articulated that she has a very comprehensive hospitalization plan that will quite possibly pay for most, if not all, of the costs required for rehab. It was clear to see that Jennifer was extremely happy with her encouraging medical forecast and felt at ease knowing that she will be able to get the alcohol dependency rehabilitation she needs so that she can begin the road to recovery. After Jennifer talked to her healthcare professional, one thing was unmistakable: facing her disease and wanting to follow the healthiest route was good for her self image and her self esteem.

As a matter of fact, due to his lethargy and lack of drive, he was without a job far more frequently than he was in a state of employment. And when he did find a job, he had an unusually difficult time getting to work in a timely manner, he usually got less than optimal performance appraisals, and he called off sick so regularly that he commonly got fired a week or two after he began working. It almost goes without saying that one of the outcomes of Jesse’s less than acceptable work history was the fact that he was almost totally broke on a day-to-day basis.

Regardless of Jesse’s awful employment history and financial misconduct, however, somehow he managed to drink in a hazardous and excessive manner on an everyday basis.

So it came as no big shock when Jesse got a second DWI. When he went before the court, the magistrate told Jesse that his alcohol-related actions was terrible and, as a consequence, he was going to sentence Jesse to serve seven months behind bars.

Time In The County Jail To Reflect On The Disruptive Outcomes of Hazardous and Abusive Drinking

During his time in jail, Jesse was expected to learn more about alcohol facts, about the harmful results of hazardous and excessive drinking, and he was required to get alcohol treatment. The judge stressed the fact that unless Jesse receives professional alcohol therapy and discovers how to live an alcohol-free life, he will most likely be spending a considerable amount of time in the municipal jail.

Jesse articulated that he understood what the magistrate was proclaiming but he still claimed that placement in the municipal jail was not the proper ruling. The magistrate thought otherwise and asserted that it was his job to keep alcohol abusers off the streets who drive and drink and who get arrested for a DWI. To authenticate this assertion, the judge quoted some revered, extensively researched alcohol statistics that underlined some of the damaging effects that are related to hazardous drinking.

Even though Jesse understood that he drank in a hazardous and excessive manner, he never believed that he was a person who was dependent on alcohol. So it was a real shocker when Jesse began suffering from alcohol withdrawals roughly six-and-a-half hours after getting locked up in jail.

To monitor his alcohol withdrawals in a harm free manner, Jesse was taken to a drug and alcohol rehab facility for alcohol detox and then brought back to the city jail. While locked up in the municipal jail Jesse received alcohol treatment but since he received this therapy as something that was forced upon him, he neglected to take ownership of his abusive drinking.

When his time behind bars was over, the magistrate without wavering told Jesse that he would be under careful surveillance and would be required to take random breath alcohol tests.

Jessie’s Excessive and Abusive Drinking Prevents Him From Living in an Adult and Mature Manner

After hearing how Jesse was unsuccessful in taking ownership of his drinking problem and how he unwillingly followed the treatment code of behavior while in jail, the magistrate knew that it was just a matter of time before he would be seeing Jesse once again in court about his irresponsible drinking behavior. As the magistrate thought about Jesse’s circumstance, he couldn’t help but think about how some individuals never use their brain and learn how to live in a responsible and accountable manner.

An Old Relationship Strengthens Jesse’s Self Esteem and Inspires and Motivates Him to Thoroughly Change His Life

But something happened in Jesse’s life that completely changed his unsafe lifestyle. One day when he was at the local grocery store buying chewing tobacco, he met Alice, a girl he hadn’t seen since the sixth grade. After some small talk, Alice frankly told Jesse that due to her alcohol and drug addiction she was lucky to be alive.

When Jesse asked her what happened to change her life, she told Jesse that when her cousin Marilyn died from a drug overdose, this forced her to see the destructive and harmful life she had been living.

She underlined the point that the first thing she did after her cousin’s funeral was to begin going back to the church she attended when she was in elementary school. That was seven years ago and with the help, support, and guidance of her reverend and other people who went to her church, she started going to Alcoholics Anonymous and she also got alcohol and drug counseling at the local drug and alcohol treatment hospital. Alice told Jesse that in spite of a couple of rough moments, she is finally on the path to long term recovery and feeling a sense of happiness and delight for the first time since she was a young adult. When Jesse accepted Alice’s invitation to attend her parish she was pleasantly surprised. After going to roughly four or five church services, for the first time since he dropped out of high school, Jesse felt an augmented sense of self esteem and began thinking that perhaps there was hope for him and that he could finally address his alcohol and drug problems and start living a more productive and rewarding life.

They met while taking the same computer science class at a small, country, liberal arts college located in the far Western part of the United States. While they were merely good friends at first, they at long last started dating when they were in their first year of college.

Given the fact that both of them came from very conservative backgrounds, neither one of them drank very much beyond the testing stage when they first started to date. As the time progressed, then again, they started to go to more sorority and fraternity parties, football bashes, keg parties, and happy hours. As a consequence, they little by little began to drink more as time passed by.

Their Social Life Regularly Consisted of Going to Restaurants Three or Four Nights Per Week, Going to Parties With Their Friends, Going to Happy Hour With Their Friends, Going to Professional Sporting Events, and Going With Their Friends to the Local Watering Hole on the Weekends

After they graduated from college, they both got jobs in a small city that was nearly fifty miles from their undergraduate college. Then they eventually decided to move in with one another.

Given the fact that they were far removed from the college drinking scene, then again, their social life typically consisted of going to parties with their friends, going to restaurants three or four nights per week, going to happy hour with their friends, going to professional sporting events, and going to the local pub with their buddies on the weekends. In brief, Merissa and Augie began drinking quite extensively.

Now that they were living in the same apartment with one another and starting to get more resolute about their relationship, nonetheless, they started thinking about having children, becoming more responsible, buying a house, and getting married.

With any momentous transformation in a person’s life there is often something that triggers the particular transformation in question. For Augie and Merissa the idea of having children and buying a new house was this “vehicle for change.” To come to the point, for the first time in their lives, Merissa and Augie began to critically evaluate their irresponsible and abusive drinking and the alcohol long term effects on their health.

How Would Their Hazardous and Abusive Drinking Affect Their Relationship With One Another, Their Mental Health, Their Ability to Have Children, Their Relationship With Their Parents, and Their Finances?

Would their heavy drinking adversely affect their ability to have children? How would they be able to continue spending most of their money on drinking if they were to begin saving for a new house? How accountable would they be if they had children and continued to drink in a hazardous and irresponsible manner? How would they be able to face their parents and tell them about their long term dreams, plans, and hopes while they still drank in an abusive and excessive manner while having fun as they did when they were in college? What would their abusive and heavy drinking do to their relationship? How would their heavy and excessive drinking affect their mental health?

From a different slant on things, although neither one of them ever suffered from alcohol poisoning, received a DUI, or experienced alcohol withdrawal symptoms, they realized that their excessive and heavy drinking was becoming a troublesome issue that they could not ”sweep under the carpet” any longer.

After Giving Their Situation Considerable Deliberation, Merissa and Augie Finally Comprehended That Their Aspirations, Hopes, and Dreams Would not be Accomplished if They Continued Their Abusive and Heavy Drinking

All of these queries undeniably resulted in the same conclusion: Augie and Merissa needed to identify more completely with the fact that they couldn’t continue their heavy and irresponsible drinking if their goals, aspirations, and dreams were to be realized.

Once they settled upon this conclusion, they advised their drinking pals about their plans to start a family, about their marital plans, and about their goal of buying or building a new house. They also told their drinking buddies that they still wanted to associate with them but that they would be drinking in strict moderation from this time forward so that they could begin realizing their future dreams, hopes, and plans.

Amazingly, all of their buddies expressed relief because they too had been reappraising their lives and concluded that their life-styles were much too frequently centered around drinking. They also felt that they would have to change radically if they were to become more adult-like and show more forethought for their health, their careers, and for their aspirations in the next five or ten years.

After their frank discussion with their friends about their goals, aspirations, and dreams, Merissa and Augie in essence started to have more meaningful relationships with all of their friends and they experienced a bolstered sense of self esteem. The fundamental reason for this was the fact that all of them had the same mentality regarding their hazardous and irresponsible drinking and their short and long-term aspirations, goals, and plans.

Indeed, due to his lassitude and lack of drive, he was out of a job far more frequently than he was in work. And when he did get a job, he had a very hard time getting to work when his shift began, he often got less than optimal performance assessments, and he called off sick so many times that he commonly got fired two or three weeks after he began working. To no one’s surprise, one of the effects of Jesse’s less than stellar employment record was the fact that he was just about flat broke almost on an everyday basis.

Regardless of Jesse’s poor employment record and financial misconduct, then again, one way or another he managed to drink in a hazardous manner almost everyday.

So it came as no big surprise when Jesse got a fourth DWI. When he went before the court, the magistrate clearly stated to Jesse that his alcohol-related actions was appalling and, as a result, he was going to sentence Jesse to spend twelve months incarcerated in jail.

Time In Jail To Think About The Demoralizing Outcomes of Abusive and Excessive Drinking

During his time in jail, Jesse was required to learn more about alcohol facts, about the injurious consequences of excessive drinking, and he was expected to get alcohol treatment. The magistrate accentuated the fact that unless Jesse gets professional alcohol therapy and discovers how to live a life of sobriety, he will most likely be spending a lot more time in the local jail.

Jesse stated that he grasped what the magistrate was pronouncing but he still stated that jail was not the best judgment. The judge saw things from an entirely different orientation and claimed that it was his responsibility to keep individuals off the streets who drive and drink and who receive multiple DWIs. To substantiate this statement, the magistrate listed some revered, comprehensively researched alcohol statistics that underscored some of the devastating outcomes that are related to excessive and abusive drinking.

Even though Jesse knew that he drank excessively, he never felt that he was an individual who was addicted to alcohol. So it was a real bombshell when Jesse began having alcohol withdrawal symptoms roughly three-and-a-half hours after getting locked up in the municipal jail.

To deal with his alcohol withdrawal symptoms in a safe manner, Jesse was transferred to a drug and alcohol treatment center for alcohol detox and then brought back to the local jail. While locked up in the local jail Jesse got alcohol rehab but since he received this counseling as something that was forced upon him, he neglected to take ownership of his irresponsible drinking.

When his time in the city jail was over, the magistrate without indecision announced to Jesse that he would be under strict scrutiny and would be required to take periodic random breath alcohol tests.

Jessie’s Irresponsible and Excessive Drinking Prevents Him From Living in a Productive and Accountable Manner

After hearing how Jesse did not take ownership of his drinking circumstances and how he unenthusiastically followed the treatment regimen while in the county jail, the magistrate knew that it was only a matter of time before he would be seeing Jesse once again in court about his careless drinking behavior. As the judge reflected on Jesse’s situation, he couldn’t help but think about how some people never “connect the dots” and learn how to live in a responsible and productive manner.

An Old Relationship Augments Jesse’s Self Esteem and Motivates and Inspires Him to Significantly Alter His Life

But something happened in Jesse’s life that completely changed his unproductive lifestyle. One day when he was at the local beverage store buying chewing tobacco, he met Alice, a girl he hadn’t seen since the eighth grade. After some small talk, Alice openly told Jesse that due to her drug and alcohol abuse she was fortunate to be alive.

When Jesse asked her what happened that changed her life so totally, she told Jesse that when her cousin Claudia died from alcohol poisoning, this forced her to see the unhealthy and ruinous life she had been living.

She stressed the point that the first thing she did after her cousin’s funeral service was to begin going back to her family church. That was eight years ago and with the guidance, help, and support of her pastor and other people who attended her parish, she started going to Alcoholics Anonymous and she also got alcohol and drug counseling at the local drug and alcohol treatment center. Alice told Jesse that despite a handful of rough moments, she is finally on the road to long lasting sobriety and feeling a sense of delight and joy for the first time in her adult life. When Jesse said “yes” to Alice’s invitation to attend her church she was pleasantly surprised. After going to about three or four church services, for the first time in his adult life, Jesse felt a strengthened sense of self esteem and began thinking that perhaps there was hope for him and that he could finally address his drug and alcohol issues and begin living a more healthy and beneficial life.

Copyright © 2012 avalon09. Visit the original article at http://raiseselfesteem.com/blog/92/a-young-couple-reviews-their-heavy-and-excessive-drinking-and-their-short-and-long-term-plans-dreams-and-hopes/.

Augie and Merissa have been dating for seven-and-a-half years. They met while taking the same financial accounting class at a relatively small, rural, private liberal arts college located in the far Western part of the U.S. While they were in actual fact good pals at first, they eventually began dating when they were in their second year of college.

Given the fact that both of them came from very conventional backgrounds, neither one of them drank much beyond the testing stage when they first started to date. As the time progressed, however, they started to go to more keg parties, sorority and fraternity parties, football bashes, and happy hours. As a consequence, they in a step-by-step fashion began to drink increasingly more as they proceeded in their relationship.

Their Social Life As a Rule Consisted of Going to Happy Hour With Their Friends, Going to Professional Sporting Events, Going to Parties With Their Friends, Going to Restaurants Three or Four Nights Per Week, and Going With Their Friends to the Local Bar on the Weekends

After they graduated, they both found employment in a relatively small city located nearly ninety miles from their undergraduate college. Then they eventually made up their mind to move into the same apartment together.

Since they were far removed from the college drinking scene, nonetheless, their social life frequently consisted of going to restaurants three or four nights per week, going to parties with their friends, going to happy hour with their friends, going to professional sporting events, and going to the local disco with their pals on the weekends. To come to the point, Augie and Merissa began drinking in an irresponsible manner.

Now that were living with one another and starting to get more resolute about their relationship, nonetheless, they began to think about buying a house, getting married, becoming more responsible, and having children.

With any major change in an individual’s life there is commonly something that starts the particular transformation in question. For Merissa and Augie the notion of having children and buying a new house was this “catalyst.” To come to the point, for the first time in their lives, Augie and Merissa started to critically review their abusive and hazardous drinking and the long term effects of alcohol on their health.

How Would Their Irresponsible and Excessive Drinking Affect Their Ability to Have Children, Their Relationship With One Another, Their Relationship With Their Parents, Their Mental Health, and Their Finances?

Would their heavy and hazardous drinking unfavorably affect their ability to have children? How would they be able to continue spending so much money on drinking if they were to start saving for a new house? How adult-like would they be if they had children and continued to drink in a hazardous and irresponsible manner? How would they be able to face their parents and tell them about their long term plans, hopes, and dreams while they still drank in an excessive and abusive manner while having fun as they did when they were in college? What would their excessive and abusive drinking do to their relationship? How would their heavy and hazardous drinking affect their mental health?

From a different line of reasoning, although neither one of them ever suffered from alcohol poisoning, received a DUI, or experienced alcohol withdrawals, they realized that their hazardous drinking was becoming a thorny issue that they could not turn their backs on anymore.

After Giving Their Situation Much Thought, Augie and Merissa Grasped the Fact That Their Dreams, Aspirations, and Goals Would not be Fulfilled if They Continued Their Heavy and Hazardous Drinking

All of these uncertainties undeniably resulted in the same conclusion: Augie and Merissa needed to understand that they couldn’t continue their hazardous drinking if their aspirations, hopes, and dreams were to be realized.

Once they settled upon this conclusion, they notified their drinking buddies about their plans to start a family, about their marital plans, and about their goal of buying or building a new house. They also told their drinking friends that they still wanted to associate with them but that they would be drinking responsibly from this point forward so that they could start realizing their future goals, aspirations, and dreams.

Surprisingly, all of their friends expressed relief because they too had been reassessing their lives and concluded that their life-styles were much too often focused on drinking. They also understood that they would have to change extensively if they were to become more adult-like and exhibit more concern for their careers, their health, and for their plans in the next fifteen or twenty years.

After their frank discussion with their friends about their dreams, hopes, and aspirations, Augie and Merissa in essence started to have more meaningful relationships with all of their friends and they experienced an augmented sense of self esteem. The main reason for this was the fact that all of them had a similar outlook regarding their hazardous and abusive drinking and their short and long-term goals, aspirations, and plans.
